McGuire, 57, is the newly named Frank Russell Chair for the business of journalism at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications. In February of 2006 he discontinued a weekly syndicated column he wrote for United Media called More Than Work. The column was purchased by 34 newspapers. It covered ethics, spirituality, and values in work. He continues to speak and conduct seminars on calling and spirituality in work and he consults in the media industry.
McGuire was the James Batten Visiting Professor of Journalism and Public Policy at Davidson College for the fall of 2003 and the Donald Reynolds Distinguished Visiting Professor at Washington and Lee in the spring of 2005.
McGuire retired in June of 2002 as editor and Senior Vice President of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis . He served in that position from 1992. Prior to that, he was managing editor of the Star Tribune. He joined the company in 1979 as managing editor of the Star. He was managing editor of the newspaper when it won a Pulitzer Prize in 1990. He has been a Pulitzer jurist six times. McGuire is a past president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors (2001-2002).
At the Star Tribune McGuire was part of a five person group that led the business operations of the newspaper and at one time he was in charge of circulation while he was editor. He has been an outspoken advocate for finding the right balance between editorial responsibility to readers and profits.
McGuire holds a B.A from Aquinas College where he was honored as an outstanding alumnus in 1992 and 2001. He graduated cum laude from Mitchell College of Law with a Juris Doctor degree in 1987 and joined the bar that same year. He served from September of 2002 to December of 2005 on the Aquinas College Board of Trustees.
Prior to joining the Star Tribune, Tim worked as the managing editor for newspapers in Ypsilanti Michigan ; Corpus Christi, Texas ; and Lakeland , Florida .
McGuire and his wife of 30 years, Jean, are the parents of three young adults and they maintain a second residence in Minneapolis.
